I want to share with you some common problems I see with my bassoon students related to fingerings so that you can look out for these in your own playing. These issues range from simple mistakes like forgetting to put a key down to more advanced techniques like venting and flicking, so this applies to both beginners and experienced players!
Playing fingerings correctly is so critical to sounding good on the bassoon. One missed key and you might be out of tune, have poor tone, or the note might not work at all. As if it’s not already difficult enough, there are a lot of bad fingering charts out there for bassoon!
In the follow video, I teach you:
- Why the whisper key is so important
- Which notes you should be using the resonance key on
- How to position both your thumbs correctly for optimal movement
- How to correctly achieve half holes and diagnose issues you might be having with them
- Why and how you should start venting on the bassoon (if you aren’t already flicking)
